The centre of Vancouver has changed faster than almost any city you can think of. Only a few decades ago it was the modest centre of an isolated region. It has seen dramatic growth in its Downtown population, with a built form (of tower and podia) which has been exported around North America. It has embraced the concept of green buildings, sustainability and promotes a car-free lifestyle by encouraging more Downtown housing and retail stores as well as the more traditional CBD office uses. It has required Public Art as part of development. Many of the new projects combine uses in ways seldom seen in North America.

With a lively text and a series of  walking tours the authors guide you through this rapidly changing city.

John Atkin is an author and civic historian with several previous books, including Vancouver Walks, and SkyTrain Explorer (also available from Steller Press). He has created, and conducts, a number of unique and popular walking tours throughout the City of Vancouver.

Andy Coupland is a city planner who has also been a journalist, tour guide, University lecturer and researcher. He has edited a book on mixed-use development.
